Report on the level of excess mortality in Ireland during pandemic years

The Society of Actuaries in Ireland's Demography Committee has published a report examining the level of excess all-cause mortality experienced in Ireland during the Covid-19 pandemic. The report offers insights beyond the tally of reported COVID-19 fatalities.  

Focusing specifically on the first two years of the pandemic, 2020 and 2021, it examines excess deaths as a metric in understanding the pandemic's impact.

Press Release on Gender imbalance in STEM careers

The Society has issued a press release highlighting that a sharp decline in female performance at the highest level in Leaving Certificate Higher Level Mathematics since 2012 is likely to create a gender imbalance in STEM careers and in female access to high-points third level courses generally.  This is according to a report prepared by the Society's Gender Pipeline Working Group.

SAI awards Honorary Fellowship to Prof Pete Lunn

The Society of Actuaries in Ireland announced today that it has elected Professor Pete Lunn, founder and head of the ESRI’s Behavioural Research Unit, as an Honorary Fellow.

Sheelagh Malin, President of the Society, said that Professor Lunn’s research into economic decision-making and how consumers navigate complex financial products provides valuable insights that can help ensure more effective regulation and communication.
