SCOR’s expert Xiao Gao, epidemiologist, will examine existing and emerging infectious diseases and analyse their interplay with climate change and health. Changes in ecosystems, such as higher temperatures, rainfall variability, storms, droughts, floods, forest fires and heat waves, trigger changes in the epidemiology of many diseases.
Claire Booth from Milliman will present a methodology for modelling mortality in France and in the United States with a Lee-Carter model integrating the climatic risk generated by heat waves and allowing to determine mortality shocks.

Xiao Gao is an epidemiologist at SCOR, working on critical illness and mortality trend modelling globally. She works closely with actuaries and medical doctors to improve trend methodology and set up expert judgements. She did extensive work on COVID19 during the pandemic, including epidemiological modelling, medical updates and excess mortality estimation. Prior to joining SCOR in 2017, she worked in clinical research and public health intervention in hospitals, and government agencies in Singapore.
Claire Booth from Milliman will cover some considerations for, and potential approaches to, producing climate-related mortality and morbidity stresses. She will explain why liability risks need to be stressed under climate scenarios as well as key climate risk drivers, challenges and market practice.
