The presentation will examine a range of ways in which providers of investment, pensions and savings products inform consumers’ understanding of risk and their expectations of return. It will also explore how product providers influence the investment advice process.

Biographical details

Paul McCarville FCA, QFA

Paul qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1980 and from 1987 to 2007 was a director in turn of Ulster Bank Investment Managers, New Ireland Asset Management and Setanta Asset Management. At Setanta, which he joined at its launch in 1998, he was responsible for services to institutional clients and their advisors, investment communication, marketing and product development.

In 2007 he co-founded Clarus Investment Solutions with Joe Mottley.

Paul is also a director and principal of Verus Advisory Limited (*). Since 2016 he has (in a personal capacity) been a member of the Finance, Audit, Investment and Governance committee of Community Foundation Ireland.

Paul has published many articles and addressed several conferences most recently that of the  Financial Planning Standards Board.


Joe Mottley B.E, M.Sc (Public Sector Analysis), QFA, Associate Member of IIMR 

Joe started his career as an Electronic Engineer with eircom. He started his career in asset management in 1985 with AIB Investment Managers. Over the next 22 years he occupied a range of front-line investment roles, involving portfolio management in all the major equity markets, along with investment strategy, asset allocation and oversight of other asset class portfolios. As a fund manager he had a highly successful performance track record. He moved to Setanta Asset Management in 1998, where he was a director and Chief Investment Officer.

In 2007 he co-founded Clarus Investment Solutions with Paul McCarville.

He has been a director of the Diversification Strategy Fund (a quant-based currency fund run by Alder Capital) since 2007, and was an Investment Advisor to Covestone Asset Management between 2010 and 2012.

Joe is also a director and principal of Verus Advisory Limited (*).

(*) Verus Advisory is a specialist consultancy which provides research, monitoring and oversight services to pension schemes who have outsourced their investment to a Fiduciary Manager or are considering doing so. It was established in 2010 by Paul McCarville, Jim Brophy, Ronan Smith and Joe Mottley.
