Investing to meet Liabilities - Current Issues for Insurance Companies and Pension Schemes

In the current low yield environment, insurance companies and pension schemes are facing a number of challenges with investing to meet their liabilities, in particular;

  • How does solvency II impact on investment strategy and capital requirements for insurance companies?
  • What issues are pension schemes facing as they mature and move to a cash flow negative position, and how can they structure their investment strategy differently? How does this fit into an LDI approach?
  • What alternative asset classes are available to aid meeting income requirements?
  • What impact does the current regulatory regimes have on valuation methods and implications for investment strategies?

This is a joint session by the Pension and Life Assurance Committees (David O'Shea from Canada Life International and Denis Lyons from Aon Hewitt are the speakers), and the session will  examine the trends and practices in these two different areas, and will seek to understand and learn from the pension approach versus the Life Assurance approach and how this can be of benefit to practitioners.
