Alternative beta – combining smart beta and diversity
Smart beta / alternative index weighting approaches have become increasingly popular in traditional asset classes, in particular equities. The principle of better investment mandate design can also be applied to diversifying asset classes and strategies. Joseph O’Dea and Suhail Shaikh will explain how smart beta approaches have been used to capture a range of diversifying investment strategies.

Joseph O’Dea, BA (Mod) FSAI
Joe is head of the investment business of Willis Towers Watson in Ireland.
After joining R Watson & Sons in 1990 in London, Joe worked initially as a pension actuary before becoming one of the first actuaries in Ireland to specialise in investment consulting.
Outside of investment, Joe is a director of the Guna Nua theatre company and is a member of the RTE Philharmonic Choir.
Suhail Shaikh, CFA (Partner & CIO, Fulcrum Asset Management LLP)
Suhail is Chief Investment Officer and a member of the Investment Team.
Since joining the firm in 2005, Suhail and the Research team have built strategies that integrate the long term fundamental drivers of asset prices with shorter term quantitative factors. Prior to joining Fulcrum, Suhail spent five years within the investment management division of Goldman Sachs, where he specialized in tactical asset allocation and portfolio construction.
Suhail graduated from the London School of Economics in 2000 and has been a CFA charterholder since 2003.
