In-person: Demography Forum 2024

We are pleased to announce details of the SAI Demography Forum. The forum will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction and overview of the work of the Demography Committee (Karl Murray)
  • Update from the Central Statistics Office of Ireland (Seán O’Connor and Eva Leahy): Seán and Eva will cover the CSO’s latest work on population estimates and mortality statistics.
  • Drivers of Mortality Dataset (Ben Rees): Ben will present the “IFoA Drivers of Mortality Dataset” which has been developed by the IFoA’s Mortality Research Steering Committee (“MRSC”) using data supplied by the UK’s Office for National Statistics.
  • Update from the CMI’s Mortality Projections Committee (Cobus Daneel): Cobus will discuss recent CMI work on mortality projections for England & Wales and its soon to be published consultation on CMI_2024, its next iteration of the CMI Mortality Projections Model.
  • Update on excess mortality in Ireland during the COVID-19 pandemic (Members of the SAI’s Demography Committee)
Biographical details

Seán O’Connor is a Statistician in the CSO’s Life Events and Demography Division and is responsible for the production of statistics relating to births, deaths and marriages.

Eva Leahy is a Statistician in the CSO’s Life Events and Demography Division and is responsible for the production of population estimates and projections.

Ben Rees is deputy chair of the MRSC Population Mortality Improvements Working Party.  Ben is also a Partner at LCP.

Cobus Daneel is the chair of the CMI Mortality Projections Committee.  Cobus is also a consultant at Willis Towers Watson.
