We are pleased to announce details of the SAI Demography Forum. The forum will cover the following topics:
- Introduction and overview of the work of the Demography Committee (Caroline Twomey)
- Update from the CMI (Matthew Edwards, CMI Executive): Matthew will discuss recent CMI work on developments in UK mortality and improvements.
- Seasonal Mortality at Older Ages and the Implications for Mortality and Longevity Risk (Mary Hall DCU and Linda Daly UCC)
- Impact of COVID-19 on health including cancer screening (Professor Patricia Fitzpatrick UCD, epidemiologist)
- Excess mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic (Members of the SAI’s Excess Mortality sub-group)
- Public Health Risks post COVID and the outlook for future Pandemics (Dr. Richard Braun, SCOR Global Life Americas)

Matthew Edwards is the Chair of the CMI Executive Committee and founding co-Chair of the COVID-19 Actuaries Response Group. Matthew is also a consultant at Willis Towers Watson.
Mary Hall is an Actuary and an Associate Professor in the School of Mathematical Sciences at Dublin City University. Her research interests are in the area of mortality and morbidity modelling for actuarial applications.
Linda Daly is an Actuary and Senior Lecturer in the School of Mathematical Sciences at University College Cork. She is a member of the Demography Committee and Research sub-committee of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland. Her research interests include mortality modelling & predicting the future extent of population ageing.
Patricia Fitzpatrick is Professor of Epidemiology & Biomedical Statistics and Head of Subject Public Health at UCD. Professor Fitzpatrick is also a consultant in Preventative Medicine at St Vincent's University Hospital and Consultant Epidemiologist/Director of Evaluation for the National Cancer Screening Service.
Dr. Richard Braun is Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of SCOR Global Life Americas. As such, he leads the medical team in consulting on complex medical cases submitted on a facultative basis. Dr. Braun has more than 30 years of experience in the (re)insurance industry. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Insurance Medicine, a past president of the American Academy of Insurance Medicine and past chair of the ACLI Medical Section.
