Design thinking is an innovation process used in problem solving, which can be used in the development of new insurance products and services. In this session Dr, Karl Thomas will introduce the five stages of design thinking and give an overview of what each of these stages entails. Adam Bower from Scor will then cover the application of design thinking concepts from an insurance practitioner perspective.
This webinar is of interest to all actuaries, but particularly those in product development/innovation roles.

Dr. Karl Thomas is a consultant, leadership coach, trainer and facilitator with www.Creatovation.ie. Through Creatovation Karl supports a range of stakeholders and clients. He is Academic Lead in Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Trinity College Dublin as part of Tangent, Trinity’s Ideas Workspace where he delivers material to both academic cohorts up to Post-Doctoral level, and to Tangent’s corporate clients.
Karl is also lead tutor on a number of corporate Graduate programs across Ireland and Internationally.
Karl is a Design sprint facilitator and acts as a mentor at various innovation and entrepreneurship events and Hackathons, and provides coaching support to start-ups and business leaders.
Karl’s focus is on developing high performance people who think differently in the field of business and innovation, creating future leaders who understand the value of communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creative problem solving as fundamental features of the innovation and business ecosystem.
Adam Bower’s specialty is creating space and energy with people, teams and communities so they can create & learn life-changing things to make a greater impact in the world. He works in Dublin as Head of Communities at SCOR, has trained in coaching and human-centered design and is the father of two beautiful children.
Adam brings multi-dimensional perspectives into the insurance consumer journey, having been a claims professional, a product leader managing Income Protection, Life TPD and Critical Illness Products, an underwriting application product owner, having studied Financial Planning, and maybe, most importantly as a customer. These perspectives fuel a passion for creating meaningful conversations and cultivating people’s curiosity to design better, and better, and better insurance solutions to meet the needs of consumers.
