Breaking up is hard to do: The impact of a potential “Brexit”

With the referendum just two months away, Tim Werkhoven and Alan Watson will consider the far-reaching implications of the UK - Ireland’s largest trading partner - voting to leave the EU, and the impact on clients Irish actuaries advise. The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in the UK has done significant work on this subject and Tim and Alan will share their thoughts on the consequences for the EU and Ireland in particular, both in terms of the local economy as well as wider financial consequences for Irish industry.

Biographical details

Tim Werkhoven MPA, Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, Policy Advisor

Tim joined the IFoA in November 2015, to help the EU Referendum working party and lead the Institute’s activities around the EU Referendum. Tim graduated from Erasmus University Rotterdam (the Netherlands) with a Masters in Public Administration. Thereafter he specialised in EU Public Affairs Management, representing a wide variety of sectors and companies (such as Tesco PLC, Royal Mail Group PLC, and British American Tobacco PLC) to the EU Institutions and stakeholders. He also lived and worked in China, where he defended the interests of European companies towards the Chinese Government. There, he argued successfully for better IP protection, for more transparency in M&A notification procedures, for easier market access, and for more focus on the environment and sustainability issues. Currently, he is –on the side- studying to obtain a Masters in Business Administration. He lives in London, but hopes to explore more of the UK, and Ireland.

He is also on the working party to review the Actuaries' Code and a member of the EU Referendum Working Party. He retired in 2015 from an eight year stint on Faculty, then Institute and Faculty Council, including several of its committees and working parties. He has served on the IFoA’s Pensions Board and is immediate past chairman of the Scottish Actuaries’ Club.

Outside of actuarial work he has interests in philately, heraldry and steam trains. So he wears several anoraks
