Restructuring Irish Pension Schemes (SAI Members only event)
The majority of Irish defined benefit pension schemes are under significant financial stress. An estimated 80% of them currently fail the minimum funding standard. Some schemes have been restructured, or may be soon, in an effort to move to a more robust and sustainable footing.
Aisling Kennedy will give an overview of how this situation evolved and she will discuss some experiences to date of restructuring schemes. She will also explore options for the future, including how issues such as security, affordability and risk-sharing might be addressed. She will refer to experiences in other countries, in particular the Dutch model.
Aisling will pose questions and invite opinions from the floor.
In addition, Keith Burns, Chairman of the Society's Pensions Committee, will outline some thoughts from the Committee, and he too would welcome audience input.
The state of pensions in Ireland is an important social issue. We invite all members to come to the meeting and offer their views, so that we can take them into account when formulating input from the Society to the recently-announced review of the pensions framework in Ireland.
