In-person: Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, Inclusion (DEAI) Forum
We are delighted to announce our second DEAI Forum will be held in-person, on Thursday, 16th May 2024. Tea/coffee will be available from 1.45 pm, with the forum beginning at 2.00 pm.
The event will include an Allyship Workshop within the Belong To (which includes 1 hour of professionalism training) presentation and a panel discussion.
Allyship Workshop
Whether it be in the workplace, at home or with our friends, we can all do more to be allies.
Based on research with the HSE, Trinity and the Office for Suicide Prevention, this workshop helps teams and individuals gain a better understanding of the LGBTQ+ community and the challenges we face. Throughout the workshop Allyship Workshop will share their research, shedding light on the LGBTQ+ community today and their history. Breakdown the terminology they use to respect others and discuss as a team how they would handle scenarios to provide support and create inclusive environments. This accessible workshop is a gateway to the LGBTQ+ community and is designed as a universal introduction to all things LGBTQ+.
Topics covered by Allyship Workshop include:
- The lived-in experience of LGBTQ+ people today
- LGBTQ+ terminology as marker of respect and support.
- Gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, and biological sex
- Challenging discrimination where you see it.
- Respecting identities and pronouns.
- How to support someone coming out.
- How to be an ally to the community and build an inclusive workspace
- Where to get help and support
Belong To is the national LGBTQ+ youth organisation
Since 2003, Belong To has grown from a youth project into a unique national services and advocacy organisation with and for LGBTQ+ children and young people. Youth services, which inform our research, education work and a development approach, enable us to provide solution-based advocacy at an institutional and public level. Belong To are rooted in and driven by their direct work with LGBTQ+ young people aged 10-24 and we exist to:
- Create and generate safe spaces and places for LGBTQ+ young people.
- Empower others through education to support LGBTQ+ young people.
- Lead policy and practice by providing expertise, developing best practice models and reflecting lived experiences.
- Ensure LGBTQ+ young people have the opportunity to have their voices heard.
- Be an advocate for LGBTQ+ young people and champion change.
Panel discussion
We all bring a unique perspective to the issue of diversity. A panel of actuaries with wide ranging experience and backgrounds will discuss what diversity means to them and how it has informed and impacted their careers. The panel will consider diversity from the perspective of different stages in the life cycle of an actuary across more traditional and wider fields. Facilitating the panel and the Q&A will be Dil Wickremasinghe.
* The Belong To presentation will include 1 hour of professionalism training *
