We are pleased to share details the 2023 GI Forum.  The event will take place in the Alex Hotel, on Friday, 24th November 2023.  Tea/coffee will be served from 8.45 am and presentations will begin at 9.15 am.

  • Title: A legal view on Personal Injury Claims

    Description: Panel discussion re recent court cases relevant to the Personal Injury Guidelines.  The panel brings together specialist insurance lawyer Martin Browne and experienced actuary Tom Donlon to provide an engaging discussion, combining nuanced legal and actuarial interpretations. The discussion will be hosted by Ryan Haughey, Actuary at Grant Thornton.  Initially we will provide a brief overview of the Personal Injuries Guidelines to set the scene

  • Title: Individual Accountability Framework

    Description: Learn about this significant new development in the regulatory landscape and what you might do next, all from the perspective of actuarial roles and actuaries. The session will present an overview of  the incoming Individual Accountability Framework (IAF), part of the Senior Executive Accountability Regime (SEAR). We will also touch on broader governance issues. The session does not require detailed prior knowledge of the subject and will have time for Q&A

Biographical details

Martin Browne joined HF in August 2022. He has extensive experience in defence personal injuries litigation, specifically public liability, employers’ liability and motor claims, from minor claims to catastrophic claims and including multi-party actions across all courts and forums. He is also frequently asked by both Irish and UK based Insurers/Lloyds Syndicates to provide specialist coverage advice on complex policy and indemnity issues and to advise generally on insurance disputes and policy wordings. In addition to his personal injury practice, Martin has significant experience in contentious Professional Indemnity matters and specifically in relation to high value, multi-party, construction-related disputes. He is a firm advocate of ADR and has regularly represented Insurers at mediation. Martin is a member of the Law Society of Ireland and the Dublin Solicitors Bar Association. ‘Martin Browne is an excellent solicitor. Tom Donlon is a proud Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland. He is a General Insurance specialist and has performed the roles of Head of Actuarial Function, Reviewing Actuary, Chief Risk Officer and Executive Director for major companies. He gained his experience internationally and in Ireland, both in industry and consulting. Tom founded Actuary Augmented Limited in 2021 to help actuaries transition into senior roles, and to help companies manage succession. Tom spends much time contemplating the impact that legislation and court decisions might have on actuarial reserving.

Trisha Gibbons: Over 20 years experience in insurance risk & regulation. Leads the Insurance Risk & Regulatory team in PwC Ireland. Expertise in governance, risk and compliance, independent third party reviews, authorisations/ change of business plans, portfolio transfers and ESG.

Joe Kennedy: Over 30 years of industry and consulting experience, including PCF roles as Chief Actuary and Signing Actuary. Currently involved in providing audit support, HoAF and Reviewing Actuary services as well as more general support on regulatory matters such as risk appetite or change of business plan. Joe has also held management roles in industry covering pricing, reserving and economic capital as well as non-actuarial roles in underwriting & products, distribution and strategy & planning.

Andy Smyth: Andy is a Consulting Director with EY Financial Services in Ireland, where he provides Actuarial, Risk, Sustainability and Other Insurance Consulting Services, to EY’s Ireland-based General & Health Insurance clients. He has worked in consulting roles in the Ireland, Bermuda and London (re)insurance markets, advising clients in areas such as Reserving, Capital, Pricing and Regulatory Change. Andy has held the signing roles of SII Head of Actuarial Function, Loss Reserve Specialist under the Bermuda EBS regime and Reviewing Actuary under the CBI's Domestic Actuarial Regime.
