In-person: Blockchain and Crypto Assets
Just over a decade ago, the market value of crypto assets had a very small total value. Today, the total value of all crypto assets is estimated to be something of the order of USD3.0 trillion.
Blockchain technology has been the key facilitator of this growth in crypto assets as it has decreased people’s reliance on government and private-sector intermediaries in the sphere of money and digital-property ownership.
Today, consumers across the world can choose to avoid banks and store their assets in “self-custody” digital wallets instead. With advances in decentralised finance (“DeFi”), it is now possible to engage in borrowing and lending, asset exchange, and the creation of synthetic assets without traditional intermediaries by using the emerging range of DeFi networks.
John Caslin and Maria Flannery will present a paper entitled ‘Blockchain and Crypto Assets’ which will outline the components of blockchain technology including public key private key cryptography, cryptographic hash functions, consensus mechanisms, smart contracts, tokenised funds, and DeFi.
The paper, Blockchain Technology and Crypto Assets can be read here.
The presentation will also address some of the legal, custody, accounting, and regulatory, aspects of crypto assets in the context of the Chapter 11 filings of a number of crypto asset exchanges including FTX, Voyager Digital, and Celsius, while touching on taxation considerations.
