Tan Suee Chieh

Past President, Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA)

Tan Suee Chieh is a Past President of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA). He has served on the IFoA council from 2017-2022. He was the Group Chief Executive at NTUC Enterprise, the holding entity of the NTUC cooperatives in Singapore, from 2013 to 2017. He had been the Chief Executive of NTUC Income, a large composite cooperative insurer; President of Asia Pacific Region of the SHL Group Ltd, a British human resources consultancy firm; and a Regional MD and a Chief Executive of Prudential plc in Asia. Tan Suee Chieh has a first-class degree from the London School of Economics (1981) and a master’s degree in organisational psychology from Columbia University, New York (2002). In February 2022, he was conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by Heriot Watt University in recognition for being a pioneering actuary and his exceptional service to the actuarial profession.

 

Alison Drill

Head of P&C Structured Solutions Asia, Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd

Alison Drill is Head of P&C Structured Solutions Asia for Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd. Her areas of expertise include non-traditional P&C reinsurance solutions, optimisation of reinsurance programs and M&A. She has particular interest and involvement in parametric re/insurance products, nature-based insurance solutions and carbon related insurance products. Alison is a Fellow of the Actuaries Institute of Australia, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries and a charterholder of the CFA Institute. She is a long-serving member of the Climate Risk Working Group of the Actuaries Institute of Australia.

 

Evelyn Yong

Consultant

Evelyn Yong is an actuary with seven years’ experience in the life insurance industry, with roles in valuation, pricing, and capital management. As a consultant at Finity’s Perils and Climate Risk practice, Evelyn works in translating climate change projections into financial impacts for insurers, investors, and banks. She previously developed Finity’s cost-benefit analysis model to assess the viability of resilience measures for Australia. Evelyn is a member of the Climate Risk Working Group (CRWG) at the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and the Resource and Environment Virtual Forum (REVF) with the International Actuarial Association (IAA).

 

Lucy Saye

Chair, IFoA's Sustainability Board

Lucy Saye is a dual qualified actuary and veterinary surgeon. She is a Fellow of the IFoA, Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary and a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Her actuarial work has focused on both traditional actuarial roles across production, reporting, capital and audit as well as sustainability focused roles in the areas of climate change and biodiversity. Lucy is the chair of the IFoA's Sustainability Board, where she has led work on the Sustainable Development Goals since joining the board in 2019. Today Lucy will tell us more about the IFoA's activity in the Sustainability space including what they see as the role for actuaries and what resources are available.

 

Caterina Lindman

Caterina Lindman retired after a 35 year career as an Actuary at Manulife Financial, located in Kitchener, Ontario. Caterina is very interested in ecology and climate change. She enjoyed working with other actuaries and climate scientists on the interesting issues associated with climate change, and in particular the challenge of communicating the state of the science through the development of the Actuaries' Climate Index. She chaired the Actuaries Climate Index Working Group, and was a member of the CIA Climate Change and Sustainability Committee, as well as the IAA’s Resource and Environment Working Group. She is the co-founder of Actuaries for Sustainable Healthcare, the leader of the Waterloo Region chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby, and a member of Waterloo Region Climate Initiatives.

 

Shiraz Jetha

Shiraz Jetha MAAA, CERA, FSA: Shiraz has over 30 years of actuarial experience. His most recent active practice area is Healthcare. His current interest includes Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and he serves on American Academy of Actuaries ERM Committee. Shiraz has served as a Board Member of Society of Actuaries and chaired a section of the International Actuarial Association. He has authored/co-authored several articles for both the publications of American Academy of Actuaries (Contingencies) and the Society of Actuaries (The Actuary). He recently retired from active employment but remains active professionallly.

 

Jennifer Alonso García

Moderator

Jennifer Alonso García joined the Department of Mathematics as a (tenured) Professor of Actuarial Science in October 2019. Besides, she is an Associate Investigator at CEPAR, and Netspar Fellow. Her research combines the areas of actuarial science, household, pension and quantitative finance to study the design, risk-sharing and financing of funded and pay-as-you-go retirement income schemes. Jennifer is currently involved in research projects on the financial decision making of households during retirement, life expectancy inequality and design and risk management of equity-linked retirement income products.
