Resilience for Actuaries

Announcement from the EAA organiser:

For more than two years now, we have involuntarily found ourselves often in unknown territory, maybe even too often! Things that had never been imagined in any scenario analysis did happen. We needed and still need to quickly adapt to an ever-changing environment as we don’t know what the future holds for us. While trying to juggle with all that adaptation, it also means that “business as usual” needs to get done.

Needless to say, that “business as usual” can also bring its share of challenges and stress with time-consuming projects (e.g. IFRS 17), ad-hoc queries and analyses and back-to-back meetings.

While actuaries are experts at quantifying risk and uncertainty in their sleep, being awake in the new normal can bring its load of (new) uncertainties that can’t be quantified but need to be managed at a personal level. To build resilience is like to build a robust internal re-assurance program for you! You’ll be in a better position to absorb shocks and volatility, even when things seem out of control.

The web session is suited to actuaries who have a few years of experience and who want to learn how to build more resilience. Note that if you’re managing a team, the concepts and exercises of this web session can be applied to your team.

The Resilience for Actuaries course is an interactive training course that ensures that the concepts presented are immediately applied through various exercises whether individually or in small groups. It is designed to give you a solid foundation on the topic of resilience to increase your own and even transmit that knowledge to your colleagues or team.

While personal resilience includes looking at work-related issues, it also necessitates to look at the other aspects of your life. The course will give you the opportunity to reflect on the bigger picture, to identify important areas of improvement and to implement the needed habits or changes. A small change can make a huge difference and the work of building and increasing resilience will continue even after the course.

At the end of the course, you will know exactly what to implement in your life for more resilience, more confidence and less stress. You may even start to thrive in challenging environments!

Benefits and advantages of the overall 12-hour course are:

  • Awareness and management of own resources
  • Awareness and management of energy level
  • Awareness of own motivations, strengths and deficiencies
  • More clarity in roles, objectives and direction
  • More psychological safety through your networks
  • Stronger sense of own responsibility
  • More resilience, more confidence and less stress, even when things seem out of control
  • Better physical and mental health
  • A non-judgemental space where room is given to your thoughts, feelings and experiences
  • Exchanges with like-minded actuaries

Note that this is not for you if:

  • you need a confirmation that you're a victim of a situation
  • you want to criticize actions that are taken by others
  • you're not ready to dig deeper
