An Introduction to Standard Setting

Announcement from the IAA organiser:

One of the Strategic Objectives of the International Actuarial Association (IAA) is to support the development of the actuarial profession worldwide and promote appropriate professional standards through Member Associations (IAA Strategic Objective “Assure: Promotion of the Profession”).

To this end, the IAA has been engaged in developing and maintaining model standards of actuarial practice, called International Standards of Actuarial Practice (ISAPs), and has encouraged actuarial standard-setting bodies to maintain substantially consistent standards to the extent that the content of the ISAPs is appropriate for actuaries in their jurisdiction.

Following the findings from a survey conducted in 2021, the IAA Professionalism Committee is hosting a series of webinars and workshops to support IAA Member Associations wanting help to establish or strengthen their standard setting process, and to encourage the adoption/adaption of ISAPs locally.

We are pleased to invite you to participate in this first webinar in the series, in which we will provide an Introduction to Standard Setting. This webinar will include presentations by Yvonne Lynch, Chair of the IAA’s Professionalism Committee, and Hillevi Mannonen, Co-Vice-Chair of the IAA’s Actuarial Standards Committees. Simon Wasserman, an Observer to the Professionalism Committee, will then join Yvonne and Hillevi for a question-and-answer session.

In this webinar we will explore what is involved in setting actuarial standards (suggested pre-reading: “Setting Actuarial Standards”, a paper by the StandardSetters Round Table). We will discuss the IAA’s objectives in developing ISAPs and look at progress to date and future plans. We will also discuss a proposal for developing Specimen Actuarial Standards, outlining the concept and how Specimen Actuarial Standards would differ from ISAPs.

The webinar will be held on Wednesday, 7 September 2022 at 07:00 EDT (Click here to check your local time). The total duration of this event will be 75 minutes including the question-and-answer session at the end. This webinar is open to all member associations of the IAA, actuarial standard setting bodies and interested parties. The webinar is free of charge – registration is essential, however (see below).

Click here to make a reservation. Please note: Once successfully registered, you will receive an automated response which will include a link to use to join the webinar. Be sure to click to add it to your calendar. On the day of the event, you will need a stable internet connection to a computer device.

You are welcome to forward this invitation to anyone who you know that may find this webinar to be of interest and would like to participate.

Should you have any questions, experience any difficulties, or need anything further, please send an email directly to Amali Seneviratne, Director Technical Activities (amali.seneviratne@actuaries.org), at the IAA Secretariat.

We look forward to your participation.
