COVID-19 and Enterprise Risk Management – Perspectives on Risk Analytics, Risk Strategy, and the Role of the CRO and Centralized Risk Function within Life Insurance Companies

At the core of effective risk management is the ability to understand and manage to tail events. In this regard, the COVID-19 pandemic is raising some profound questions for risk practitioners. In this webinar, Tony Dardis, Chloe Lau, and Ariel Weis discuss what they have seen as the emerging issues, considered from the perspectives of: risk analytics; risk strategy; and the role of the Chief Risk Officer (“CRO”) & centralized risk function within life insurance companies. After this webinar you will gain a broader picture and understanding of the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic has posed for risk practitioners at its inception.

The aim of this webinar is to provide an overview of the effect that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the risk practices of life insurance companies, and theorize on how they are expected to evolve going forward.

Biographical details

Ariel Weis

Ariel is an actuary with over 10 years of experience in the life insurance industry across the US, Canada, the UK and Argentina, who is currently focused on ERM. His experience includes several projects assessing ALM and risk functions for clients, and being the pricing actuary for a Life Insurer in Canada, where his responsibility included for product development, pricing, hedging, and risk management for a wide variety of products.

Chloe Lau

Chloe is an actuary with 14 years of experience who has held several different roles within the consulting and financial services industry. Her areas of expertise include investment strategies, ALM, financial and insurance risks monitoring, as well as overall business strategy and program implementation. She has served in second line risk function with experience in setting company-wide risk frameworks to address different types financial and operational risks. Chloe’s other prior experience includes serving as the business director for her company’s CEO, providing strategic vision and execution for different areas of the business, as well as leading the implementation of a new valuation system in the company.

Tony Dardis

Tony is an actuary and seasoned risk practitioner with nearly 40 years of experience in the financial services industry, with specialty in ERM for life insurance companies. Tony’s practical experience covers both the assets and the liabilities sides of the balance sheet; the “A” side including working for an investment bank in the City of London. He has been engaged in a number of ERM implementation and review projects, and for a wide variety of insurers - large and small, life and non-life, and US versus non-US. He has also been involved in risk management activities at a very senior level, including chairing one high profile insurer’s Board Risk Committee. Tony is a widely published author on ERM matters, as well as a frequent speaker at industry events. His professional designations include FIA, FSA and CFA.
