Investing at the End of the Cycle
Three of the world’s major reserve currencies are now approaching the ends of the short-term and long-term debt cycles. Debt and non-debt obligations (like healthcare and pensions) are increasing faster than incomes that are required to fund them. Populism is rising in many countries driven by the increasing gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have nots’ while a significant conflict is developing between the two superpowers, US and China. At the same time, market valuations are arguably at rich levels while cash returns are negative. How will monetary policy and fiscal policy change to help the global economy and what does it mean for investors?
