Biographical details

Chairing the event: Andy Smyth

Andy is a Consulting Director with EY Financial Services, where he leads the provision of Non-Life Actuarial Services in Ireland, to both international and domestic (re)insurers. He has worked in consulting roles in the Irish, Bermuda and London (re)insurance markets.

Andy’s technical expertise covers a broad range of Services, including Solvency II/Bermuda EBS, IFRS 17, Finance & Actuarial Transformation, M&A due diligence, ILS, Risk Management and Independent Reserve/Capital Reviews. He has been approved to sign-off on the Solvency II-equivalent TPs of Bermuda-based (re)insurers, and has also held the role of Reviewing Actuary under the CBI's Domestic Actuarial Regime.

Andy is as a member of the SAI's General Insurance Committee and Non-Life IFRS 17 Working Group.

 

Panellists:

Aoife O’Brien

Aoife is a Director in KPMG’s Actuarial Service practice. She has more than 10 years of experience across pricing, reserving, capital and risk. Her role spans a wide range of actuarial projects involving reserve valuations, financial reporting, technical pricing, Solvency II support, IFRS 17 and insurance audits. She is currently responsible for a portfolio of Head of Actuarial Function, reserve review and audit clients of the Firm.  As Head of Actuarial Function to a portfolio of insurance clients, she is responsible for opining on underwriting processes, supporting on pricing analysis and she chaired the SAI’s response to the CBI’s public consultation on Differential Pricing.

 

Grainne Madden

Gráinne Madden is Head of Personal Lines Underwriting & Pricing for RSA Insurance Ireland. Prior to joining RSA in 2015 she worked for Zurich insurance. She has 14 years of experience working in Personal Lines non-life Actuarial Pricing.

 

Louise Thomas

Louise is a qualified Actuary with 20 years’ experience in the Irish insurance industry. She is a pricing specialist in Deloitte’s Actuarial, Rewards & Analytics practice. She currently supports clients in an audit and advisory capacity focusing on Pricing, Risk Management and Solvency II.

Prior to joining Deloitte, Louise held senior actuarial and executive roles for RSA Ireland and Aviva Insurance Ireland.

She has led teams to deliver streamlined and modern approaches to pricing across many commercial and personal lines, including long-tail and short-tail business. She has developed pricing algorithms for many classes of business from highly numerical and computationally intense personal lines, through to more underwriter led heterogenous commercial lines and across platforms with varying degrees of sophistication.

A particular area of expertise is in understanding the link between an underwriter's role is assessing risk and price and an actuary’s role in assessing likelihood and cost, she works to ensure this relationship is at its most effective to create statistically robust and market competitive rates for her clients.

 

Ishika Chawla

Ishika Chawla is a recently qualified actuary with 7.5 years of experience in the UK, Irish and US non-life (re)insurance industry. She is a senior consultant in Deloitte’s Actuarial, Rewards & Analytics practice. Her experience spans through various audit and advisory projects focused on non-life pricing, model development, Solvency II review and IFRS 17 implementation.

Prior to joining Deloitte, she has 3 years of reserving experience with two global re(insurance) companies, one with its headquarters in Bermuda and another one in New York. She has also worked for 1.5 years in a consulting environment on advisory projects for Lloyd’s syndicates.
