Workshop on presentations to Boards, Pension Trustees, or Management Committees

***Please note that the Workshop is limited to a maximum of 6 attendees***

This half day course will give you the techniques, structures and confidence to present information in a boardroom, at pension trustee meetings or in a management committee setting in a way that is engaging and understandable.

Actuaries typically deal with a lot of complex information and processes, and may rely on key assumptions and consider a range of scenarios in order to reach conclusions. While the results of that work will be presented in a detailed report, actuaries are also expected to present a summary with their conclusions and recommendations to a board, management committee or pension trustee meeting. Presentations of this type are among the most important communications you face in your professional life.

You need to make a strong impression, conveying the depth of understanding that you have, while not swamping the meeting with information or being distracted by unnecessary detail. You need to be clear about the key messages to be conveyed and ensure that these can be readily understood by actuaries and non-actuaries alike. If there are matters on which you are seeking input from the committee, you need to facilitate a constructive discussion. You need to accept and be open to challenge and be prepared to respond to a range of questions without being unduly defensive or condescending. And you need to do this in a confined and limited time frame.

In short, you need the skills to deliver a clear, considered and concise presentation. This course will give you the skills to do that.

The half day will be practical and scenario based. You will be expected to come ready to present a detailed report in summary form. This will be assessed in a small group, we keep the groups to a maximum of six. This practical element allows the consultant to draw out the key learnings and show how they should be applied. And it allows for individual feedback.

This course is suitable for actuaries in management positions or consultancies who as part of their current or future roles will be required to present the results of their work to a committee or board meeting, or at a pension trustee meeting. It will be particularly valuable for those aspiring to a reserved role or head of function appointment, such as Pricing Actuary, Head of Actuarial Function, Scheme Actuary or Chief Risk Officer and to those already in this type of role who want to further develop their communication skills.
